Canberra - Houses of Parliament

Canberra owes its existence to the stubbornness of Sydney and Melbourne, the most important cities of Australia. In 1899 the prime ministers of the then independent Australian states decided to merge together to the large state we know today. A small area within New South Wales was set aside to form the Australian Capital Territory ACT. The city is not a grown, but constructed entity. The parliament came together for the first time in 1927. In 1988, the parliament moved into the new Houses, which contains both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
