Newcastle University

Newcastle University has about 15,000 students in various subjects. Education is becoming one of Australias most important export goods: Many students come from overseas paying up to (and sometimes over) A$15,000 per year for their education.

The photo gives an impression of the Bushland Campus: The university campus is divided in two major parts with Engineering and Natural Sciences in the far part and the Arts in the near part. Between the two, a large area has been left in its natural bushland state serving for scientific purposes as well as for recreation. Not long ago, these parts were independent universities which have been merged but recently. See the university homepage for details.

Many students choose to live on the campus in one of a number of residential colleges. The photo shows International House where I spent my time in Australia. One half of the students comes from overseas while the other half is Australian. International house is one of three residential colleges "on campus". While the area is bustling with activity throughout the academic year, most Australian students return home for the summer holidays and many rooms stand empty.
