Newcastle was founded in 1803 for the worst convicts deported to Australia. Soon it was known as "The hell of New South Wales".
The Newcastle harbour is the gateway to the Hunter region. The port is the secondmost important harbour in New South Wales, especially for steel and coal. A large steel works underlines the importance.
Newcastle Harbour also has it beautiful sides - palm trees line the quay and an old guide tower offers a nice view over the harbour and the city.
Along the quay a number of restaurants offer delicious seafood. Further to the east Nobby´s head, an island artificially connected to the mainlands marks the entrance to the harbour. The breaking waves sometimes leave the visitor pretty wet. Along the way plaques remind of ships that have failed at the coast.
More pleasant is a trip up the river to the wine areas of the Hunter river or a nice summer afternoon at the beach.
