Sydney Opera House

The Sydney opera house is situated at Bennelong Point directly next to Circular Quay. It was designed by the Danish architect Jörn Utzon. It took fourteen years (1959-1973) to complete the building and cost $102,000,000! There were many technical and logistical difficulties that led to the resignation of the architect once the outer building was completed.

The sail-shaped roof was made from shell sections of equal radius. There are four houses with over 5,000 places, over 4.5 ha of usable area.

The interiour was not built by the plans proposed by Utzon, but by a much simpler design. You can look at a computer-generated fly-through of the original design at the Utzon exhibition next to the original blueprints.

It is very hard to get tickets for any performance at the opera house, as over 80% of the tickets are sold by subscription. Every Sunday, though, young Sydneysiders can buy leftover tickets in the so-called "student run".

The only possibility to visit the inside of the Opera House outside the regular performances is with a (comparably cheap) guided tour. If You are lucky, You can watch a rehearsal of a performance.
