Kakadu NP

About two hundred kilometers east from Darwin, a large area has been declared a National Park. At this point, only a large set of gates and a toll station mark the entrance to the park though. The visitors centre and art sites are two hundrd kilometers further. About halfway, a gas station with restaurant and snack bar allow the weary traveller to rest. So if You plan to visit Kakadu NP by car, plan a two-day stay (there is a camping place near the visitors centre) or a very long drive home. It is advisable not to travel by dark as many animals in Kakdu NP are nocturnal. Especially nasty are large owls sitting right in the middle of the road.

Nourlangie

The art sites and archaeological sites of Kakadu National Park illustrate and reveal information about the development of Aboriginal culture through times of great change. The name Nourlangie is an anglicized version of the word Nawurlandja and refers only to a portion of the whole area. The higher parts of what is commonly called Nourlangie Rock is called Burrunggui by the Gun-djeihmi speakers who own this land. The lower areas are called Anbangbang. At Nourlangie you can walk to an ancient living Shelter, a variety of art sites and a lookout. In the Dry Season it is also possible to walk around Anbangbang Billabong and to the top of Nawurlandja.
