Cairns harbour is the starting point fot trips to the Great Barrier Reef. This causes that the parts of the reef which are neer to Cairns are very crowded. Some parts of the reef are destroyed by anchoring tourist ships. If you want to visit the reef, don't start from Cairns! There are about 2000 km of reef (great Barrier...), so you don't have to! During the main travelling season Cairns is very busy. Much people to meet and a lot of fun in the pubs. Ah...and go not on a trip to the reef if there is a cyclone...
