Hahndorf is a German settlement. This still can be seen by the more or less tastefully restorated buildings. The town is rather "touristy" and all the shops are open on Sundays. The art gallery and the museum proudly call themselves "Hahndorf Academy". On summer afternoons, one can see craftsmen at work, for example a blacksmith. Each year Australians (not only those whose ancestors came from Germany) meet at a "Schützenfest;" and drink large amounts of beer.
