After James Cook landed on the shores of the state that is today called Victoria, more thorough exploration parties followed in 1798. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1803, Portland was founded by sheep farmers in 1834. In 1837 a town was founded at the Port Philip bay and was to be called Melbourne. An over-land route to Sydney was established in 1836. The new colony became independent from New South Wales in 1851 after some struggles. A certain rivality is present even today between the convict-founded Sydney and the aristrocratic Melbourne.
