The Great Ocean Road from Melbourne towards Adelaide is renowned for its impressive sandstone coastline only interrupted by seemingly endless beaches. Unhindered by any land masses, the waves of the Antarctic ocean roll against the yellow cliffs that are slowly but steadily eaten away by the tides.
Port Campbell National Park shows the most beautiful of the sights. Exposed to the sea, the cliffs retreat at a neckbreaking pace of two centimeters a year giving rise to bizzare stone formations. More than one tourist has gotten caught by the rising tide on a beach below the cliffs.
A few years ago a German tourist group got caught on a rock island after a natural stone bridge collapsed behind them; they had to be rescued by a helicopter.
