Hochschule fuer Bankwirtschaft (HfB) is a private university for banking and finance. Founded in 1990 by Germany's large private banks (Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, Commerzbank, Hypovereinsbank and BHF-Bank) , it has since expanded its strong ties to the financial industry and has become the renowned centre of competence in research and education in banking and finance. It has the status of a German Fachhochschule.
HfB is located in Frankfurt, Europe's capital for banking and finance. The European Central Bank, Deutsche Boerse AG and the headquarters of most large private banks are in close vicinity to the university complex. The regular exchange with these institutions and other market players stimulates and fosters debates and discussions during classes and beyond.
The HfB concept is unique: parallel to taking courses, undergraduate students either complete an apprenticeship or, if they have already done so, work part-time. Both models guarantee that students can immediately employ in practice what they have learnt. Professors and adjuncts do not only have professional and educational skills, but also look back on several years of practical experience. Small study groups, a modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure and technical equipment as well as competent and committed professors allow to work efficiently.
Currently, two undergraduate programmes are offered: "Bachelor of Business Administration" and "Bachelor of Computer Science in Banking & Finance". Each takes seven semesters including one semester abroad where students not only study at one of HfB's partner universities (two in Australia among them) but also work as an intern in a company or bank. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a degree in economics and the solid entry in all fields of banking and finance. Graduates of the Bachelor of Computer Science in Banking & Finance (BCS) will work at the interfaces of the financial industry and information technology - subjects such as bank informatics are taught through all semester. Both Bachelor programmes are accredited by FIBAA and recognised as a full-time course according to German legislation.
The "Master of Arts (Banking & Finance)", HfB's postgraduate programme, is offered with two specialisations: Investment Banking and Bank Management. This two-semester follow-up programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical aspects and requirements of financial management. Students develop skills for the methodological understanding and analysis of financial questions to produce innovative, viable solutions ¾ in both, core subjects and the specialisations Investment Banking and Bank Management. There is also emphasis on social and intercultural skills.
The programme is accredited by FIBAA and recognised as a full-time course according to German legislation. The schedule, however, allows to work part-time. Degree holders are entitled to write a doctorate thesis. The programme begins in the summer semester of each year.
